Hello everyone.

I'm a newbie here, and I have a Voodoo5 5500 AGP. I would like to know which is the best motherboard for that card either with an intel processor or an AMD Processor. If you could help me I would be very thankful. Thanks in advance and forgive my english, I'm from Ecuador, South America

hi there~~
you have a AGP3.3V version of voodoo 5 or AGP 1.5V version of voodoo 5?
for the former one, what you can get is only boards based on KT266 (AMD), since all intel P4 products needs an AGP 1.5 card or otherwise it will burn.
for the letter one, almost all boards in the modern market can take it. (except intel 915/925 series since they don't have a AGP slot~~)
it would be nice to get a fast Athlon 64/P4 and use dual channel memory nowadays
No way a 3DFX collector...just a 3DFX die Hard Player~~

P4 Extreme Edition 3.4GHz
Asus P5AD2 Deluxe i925x
2GB DDR2 667 DDRRAM

Joidrovo; completely ignore secretfj's post. He is totally wrong and giving you info you don't need.

You need to look for a motherboard with a Universal AGP slot.

There are some threads on this forum in which you can find lists of motherboards that work with the Voodoo 5. There are a lot!

Personally I use an ASUS P4S533 with an Intel Pentium 4 2,26GHz.

Check out this image which will give you an idea what you're looking for: http://www.tweakers.net/ext/f/12076/full.gif
Take a look at illustration C since that is what you'll be looking for.

hey phalax, are you sure that i am wrong?
i will be very pleased if you put a AGP3.3V card into a modern 865PE/ nForce 2 board and tell me that you can boot up flawlessly~~ because i have an old card that is not AGP 1.5V compilent and i dun have suitable mainboard to use it~~

P.S. for the universal AGP one, you've got a point as a universal AGP is AGP 3.3V/1.5V compilent and it support both cards..but you have to admit that they are harder and harder to find (not to mention old boards that only support single channel as it have no point to install a 800FSB new P4s on these boards and run without dual channel, as you know, the performance hit can be great~~)
that's what i wanna say, more and more mainboard needs a cards support 1.5V AGP, otherwise everything will blow up~~
No way a 3DFX collector...just a 3DFX die Hard Player~~

Okay, you're somewhat right.

Quoteyou have a AGP3.3V version of voodoo 5 or AGP 1.5V version of voodoo 5?
I doubt he has an AGP4x version since these are extremely rare.

I already proved you wrong on this one in my previous post :D

Once again, an AGP4x capable V5 5500 is extremely rare.

Personally I'd go for an AMD system since AMD's cpu's get you more power. An AthlonXP 2200+ will get you more performance than a P4 2,26GHz.

you are right, i've got a mistake on what chipsets support AGP 2X nowadays..thanks for reminding me
sorry for careless reply and my tone, maybe i haven't expressed it clearly..
this page says exactly what i wanna say..
BTW, i was quite shocked when i hear that modern mainboard ony takes AGP 4X cards...(i only use Celeron 533 and i815e that day), it is quite stupid for me (my graphic blaster~~)

Thanks for your help, to all of you. I have a Voodoo5 5500 AGP with Bios v1.06 and I believe it's not a 1.5V card. That's why I'm trying to find a good mainboard that could use it.

I have an Abit BX133 RAID and I'm using it with a Pentium III 1.1Ghz and 512MB RAM and it's working fine, but I knew that there were other mainboards that could support the card with higher and more powerful processors.

Does the MSI KT3 Ultra 2 support it?

omega_supreme

Yes it does [8D] In fact its the best tested mainboard (for voodoo 5 6000, but ofcourse 5500 will work too)

joidrovo

Thanks for all your help. Is there another mainboard that also supports the V5, maybe on the Intel side?:D

Look around at various motherboard manufacturers sites. They usually have an overview of their products. Look for motherboards with a universal AGP slot.

Frying a 3dfx 3.3V ONLY AGP video card in a motherboard is impossible since the 3.3V only cards don't physically have the extra slot cutout in them, and so they are impossible to put in a motherboard that can't use them....  the old diamond agp cards (and Nvidia chipsets if I remember) DID have the capability of fryage because of the stupid and moronic physical jumper on the video card that had to be moved depending on the AGP voltage you wanted to use on the OLD motherboards that didn't have the automatic voltage scaling....  This was back in the days of the LX MB chipset...... OLD SKOOL.[:p]

For AMD there is only one chipset you can have. That will be the KT333. For that is one simple reason. That chipset supports 166 MHz FSB ánd AGP 2x. You can put a Barton 3000+ in that mainboard with a Voodoo 5 5500 AGP if you want.

I have A kt333 too, a MSI KT3 Ultra ARU. That's in fact the same board as the Ultra 2 but an older revision. As you might know the older revisions of the KT333 chipsets have a bug in the southbridge so it cant operate @ 166 MHz, to solve the problem you need the revision 2 mainboards with a KT333 chipset. However my revision 1.x doesn't have that problem.

I'm running a Duron 1600 Flawlessly @ 174 MHz FSB = 2094 MHz. With a Voodoo 5 5500 AGP @ 189 MHz it results in an astonishing 2929 3dmark 2001 points :)

The best mobo for Voodoo5 5500-6000 is MSI K8T Master2
How about Dual Opteron system ? :D

Hi

I use Soyo Dragon Ultra mobo. It runs now in 2.8Ghz(533) Intel cpu, and 333DDR memories. It goes over 3 gigs, but it isn't safety to push v56k too much.. ;)

I had lucky to get this mobo when they were still available in stores..

How about a SOYO SY-KT333 Dragon Ultra. I believe they support AGP 1X/2X do they?. Are they better than the MSI KT3-Ultra 2?
