Con il comunicato stampa di seguito allegato, Advanced Micro Devices, meglio nota con l'acronimo di AMD, ha annunciato "l'intenzione di avviare un processo di separazione della parte dedicata alla progettazione dei componenti da quella che invece si occupa della produzione degli stessi" creando, sostanzialmente, due nuove aziende specializzate in settori differenti anche se fortemente connessi tra loro.
L'operazione sarà resa possibile dal finanziamento proveniente dall'emirato di Abu Dhabi, realizzato mediante la partecipazione del fondo Advanced Technology Investment Company (ATIC) nell'ambito della attivita di fabbricazione dei chip. A tal proposito ATIC finanzierà nei prossimi cinque anni, con un capitale che va dai 6.9 ai 10 milioni di dollari, la costruzione di una nuova fabbrica nello stato americano di New York e la ristrutturazione delle due fabbriche che AMD ha aperto da tempo nei pressi di Dresa in Germania. AMD e ATIC daranno vita alla organizzazioe "Foundry Company", dedicata alla produzione dei dispositivi microelettronici.
Inoltre, un altro fondo di Abu Dhabi, il Mubadala Development, verserà ad AMD 314 milioni di dollari, in cambio di una quota di partecipazione complessiva del 19.3% (circa un anno fa, il Mubadala Development aveva già messo le mani su una quota pari all'8% con uni investimento di 622 milioni di dollari, ndr).

To scale capacity, The Foundry Company intends to proceed with a planned capacity expansion in Dresden, Germany. In addition, the company plans, subject to the transfer of previously approved New York State incentives, to begin construction on a new state-of-the-art facility in Saratoga County, New York, creating more than 1,465 highly-skilled, advanced manufacturing jobs and stimulating the creation of thousands more local jobs. Once operational, the New York facility will be the only independently-managed leading-edge semiconductor manufacturing foundry in the United States.
