Con il comunicato stampa allegato di seguito Intel Corporation ha annunciato la disponibilità della linea di processori centrali dual-core Xeon 5100, anche noti con la sigla "Woodcrest", destinati all'impiego nelle workstation, nei server e nei sistemi di comunicazione e di storage.

I processori (cfr. foto seguente) sono basati sulla nuova architettura Core, si interfacciano con le motherboard mediante il socket LGA-771 e vantano un ridotto consumo di potenza in virtù del raffinato processo tecnologico a 65nm mediante il quale sono prodotti.

Per fissare le idee la versione Xeon 5160, che con il clock pari a 3GHz/core è il top di gamma per prestazioni e prezzo, vanta un Thermal Design Point (TDP) di soli 80W.

La linea 5100 supporta le tecnologie proprietarie Intel Virtualization Technology (Intel VT), Intel Execute Disable Bit, Intel Active Server Manager (Intel AMT) e Intel I/O Acceleration Technology (Intel I/OAT): tuttavia il chip-maker americano ha concepito questi chip senza includere l'HyperThreading, ritenuto superato nell'architettura Core.

• Xeon 5150 (2.66GHz / 4MB L2 / 1333MHz FSB, $690)
• Xeon 5160 (3GHz / 4MB L2 / 1333MHz FSB, $850)
• Low-voltage Xeon 5148 (2.33GHz / 4MB L2 / 1333MHz FSB, $519)

Queste cpu sono utilizzabili sia con le comuni memorie RAM DDR2-533 e DDR2-667 che con le FB-DIMM (Fully Buffered DIMM, 69 pin, un solo buffer per i segnali di controllo e dati, ndr).

Fra circa un mese è atteso l'annuncio dei processori Core 2 Duo (anche noti come Conroe, ndr) che condivideranno con i Woodcrest l'architettura di base ma saranno commercializzati per il segmento dei desktop.
