NVIDIA annuncia l'integrazione di NVIDIA GRID virtual GPU (vGPU) in Citrix XenDesktop 7, che consente di sprigionare il pieno potenziale della grafica desktop virtualizzata in ambito enterprise.

NVIDIA GRID vGPU risponde alle nuove esigenze che si sono largamente diffuse negli ultimi anni, a seguito del sempre maggior utilizzo dei propri notebook e dispositivi portatili da parte dei dipendenti. Inizialmente era stato fatto affidamento sulle tecnologie per la virtualizzazione dei desktop, ma questa strada era percorribile solo per le applicazioni enterprise più semplici. I limiti a livello di performance e compatibilità non rendevano, infatti, possibile fare altrettanto per applicazioni di building information management (BIM), product-lifecycle management (PLM) e video-photo editing.

Queste "mancanze" sono state eliminate due decenni fa sui PC, quando la grafica hardware ha sostituito l'emulazione software. Le soluzioni per la virtualizzazione dei desktop stand alone non avevano una grafica hardware dedicata, andando così ad appesantire ulteriormente i carichi di lavoro delle CPU virtualizzate e creando problemi di compatibilità.

La situazione iniziò a migliorare circa un anno fa con l'introduzione delle GPU non virtualizzate nei Citrix XenServer. Ma i miglioramenti in termini di efficienza risultavano limitati, poiché ogni utilizzatore aveva ancora necessità di una GPU dedicata.

Con l'introduzione del HDX GPU sharing e le tecniche di deep compression in XenDesktop 7, gli utenti NVIDIA e Citrix possono immediatamente trarre beneficio dalla virtualizzazione del desktop anche con applicazioni intensive e particolarmente complesse sul fronte della grafica. Utilizzando le piattaforme Microsoft Windows Server RDSH e XenDesktop 7, è possibile la condivisione di GPU attraverso sessioni con utenti multipli. Inoltre, la combinazione di Citrix XenServer e NVIDIA GRID vGPU consente agli utenti di condividere le GPU attraverso macchine virtuali VDI multiple. Ciò permette alle aziende di ampliare la portata dei loro ambienti virtuallzzati condividendo le GPU in modo efficiente tra gruppi di utenti, come ad esempio:

NVIDIA today announced that it is unleashing the full graphics potential of enterprise desktop virtualization with the availability of NVIDIA GRID vGPU integrated into Citrix XenDesktop 7.

NVIDIA GRID vGPU technology addresses a challenge that has grown in recent years with the rise of employees using their own notebooks and portable devices for work. These workers have increasingly relied on desktop virtualization technologies for anytime access to computing resources, but until now this was generally used for the more standard enterprise applications. Performance and compatibility constraints had made it difficult for applications such as building information management (BIM), product-lifecycle management (PLM) and video-photo editing.

Two decades ago hardware-based graphics replaced software emulation. Desktop virtualization solutions stood alone as the only modern computing form without dedicated graphics hardware. As a result, an already busy virtualized CPU limited performance and software emulation hampered application compatibility.

The situation began to improve a year ago with the introduction of the non-virtualized GPU in Citrix XenServer. But efficiency gains were limited because each user still required a dedicated GPU.

With the introduction of new HDX GPU sharing and deep compression techniques in XenDesktop 7, NVIDIA and Citrix customers can immediately take advantage of the hosted-shared form of desktop virtualization to deliver rich, graphics-intensive applications. Using the Microsoft Windows Server RDSH and XenDesktop 7 platform can enable the sharing of GPUs across multiple user sessions.

Furthermore, the combination of Citrix XenServer and NVIDIA GRID vGPU technology allows customers to efficiently share GPUs across multiple virtual machines.
