Con il comunicato stampa di seguito allegato, AMD ha reso noto che la partnership con Sun Microsystems ha portato alla immissione sul mercato, da parte di quest'ultima, di sei nuovi server basati sui processori quad-core Opteron: i nuovi sistemi sono siglati Fire X4140, Sun Fire X4240 e Sun Fire X4440 mentre per i server Sun Fire X2200 M2, Sun Fire X4100 M2 e Sun Fire X4200 M, anch'essi parte della rinnovata offerta di Sun per i clienti Enterprise, si tratta in realtà di un upgrade con la cpu Opteron a quattro core. Il chip-maker statunitense fa inoltre sapere che le soluzioni Sun Blade X8440 e Sun Fire X4600 M2 arriveranno in commercio alla fine di Giugno. In accordo ad AMD, Sun ha scelto di produrre questi server con processori Opteron in virtù della sofisticata gestione della potenza, ma anche per le capacità di virtualizzazione e per la possibilità di implementare la Direct Connect Architecture, che supera il concetto di FSB e permette una comunicazione più veloce del processore con la RAM e le device di I/O determinando come effetto netto un boost delle performance. Sun has expanded its line of AMD Opteron processor-based servers with the new Sun Fire X4140, Sun Fire X4240 and the industry's only 4-socket x64 AMD Opteron processor-based server in a 2U form factor, the Sun Fire X4440. In addition, the Sun Fire X2200 M2, Sun Fire X4100 M2, Sun Fire X4200 M2 servers are now available with the Quad-Core AMD Opteron processor. While the Sun Blade X8440 and Sun Fire X4600 M2 servers are planned to be available by the end of June 2008.
