MSI ha annunciato la video card Radeon R9 280 Gaming, una new entry nell'ambito della serie Gaming che il maker taiwanese dedica tradizionalmente ai videogiocatori. Dal punto di vista estetico, la Radeon R9 280 Gaming, censita a catalogo con la denominazione compatta di R9 280 GAMING 3G, è molto simile alla soluzione Radeon R9 280X Gaming, introdotta in precedenza.

La Radeon R9 280 Gaming è basata sulla gpu a 28nm "Tahiti" di AMD, che integra 1792 stream processor, 112 TMU e 32 ROP, ed è equipaggiata con un frame buffer implementato con 3GB di RAM G-DDR5; il bus che interconnette la memoria on board al processore grafico è a 384-bit.

Per questa card MSI ha previsto tre differenti modalità di funzionamento (OC, Gaming e Silent). Nei tre casi la frequenza di base del core grafico è pari a 933MHz, mentre quella di Boost raggiunge il valore di 1000MHz in OC mode, quello di 972MHz in Gaming mode e quello di 933Mhz in Silent mode. Il frame buffer, invece, lavora sempre a 1250MHz (o 5Gbps).

La Radeon R9 280 Gaming assorbe potenza dalla PSU attraverso un connettore PCI-E a 6-pin e uno a 8-pin, e può vantare la dotazione di un cooler basato sulla tecnologia proprietaria Twin Frozr IV. Il kit di connettori di uscita è composto da una porta HDMI 1.4a, due DVI-I dual-link e due mini-DP.
