La nuova soluzione deve essere inquadrata nell'ambito della piattaforma Dragon: può vantare un valore della frequenza di clock per core, pari a 3.4GHz, mai raggiunta da altri chip di AMD.

Il nuovo Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition ha un socket di tipo AM3; supporta la memoria centrale RAM di tipo DDR3 o DDR2. Tra le feature in primo piano del nuovo processore vi sono, in accordo allo stesso produttore, l'elevata propensione per l'operatività in overclocking, gestibile in maniera semplificata con l'ausilio del software di tuning AMD OverDrive 3.0, la compatibilità nativa con i prossimi game DirectX 11 e la dotazione della tecnologia Cool’n'Quiet di terza generazione.
