3DFX demo scene

is there anyone in the 3DFX community who also contributes to the demoscene?

It would be cool if there was a little corner of it dedicated to making demos that ran specifically on GLIDE or at least used OPEN-GL or DIRECT X 3D but designed to push the 3DFX hardware to the limits of its features & capability's.

It's always interesting to see what people are doing with there old hardware like the commodore 64 and Spectrum and Amiga demo scenes , still writing code and showing off there capability's, and I'm always surprised to see what some of these old machines are capable of today, so wouldn't it would be cool to see a group of people making demos that show off the old 3DFX hardware to its limits and make us think "wow! is that really running on a voodoo" .

I know people have gone to a lot of effort to get newer games to run on 3DFX tech, but wouldn't it be nice to see a 3DFX 'following' in the demo scene also?

Or is there just nobody in the 3DFX community with that kind of knowledge base/programming background?

Perhaps contact could be made with some of the major demoscene contributors to see if any of them would be interested in working on voodoo based hardware?

After all, the demo's wouldn't have to be strictly voodoo only, so they could still run on other systems, but it would still be interesting to see what can be done on a voodoo with a bit of programming skill.

here are a couple of my fav demoscene's to give you an idea of what can be done with very little file size.

This one is only 179KB in size to do all this! :) wow

And this one is a tiny 4KB file! :o

Well.. I've been in contact with a demo group I randomly stumbled on called 'UNREAL VOODOO' :)

I emailed them about the idea, and this is what they said:

QuoteHi,

That sounds like an interesting idea -- especially since the 3dfx
chips are pretty well reverse-engineered these days. I'm sorry
disappoint you about our name, though; it predates both Voodoo the GPU
and Unreal the game.

I've done some coding on 3dfx chips back in the day, although mostly
through MiniGL. I don't have any hardware any longer, though, and
these days it's also harder than it should to find time for projects
like these :/

Did you have some more specific ideas for the demo itself?

So, would anybody like to put forward some ideas for a demo? And I can pass them on?

BUMP!

What? no interest in this on the forum what so ever? [:(]

Hi Gaz,

until now you got zero replies but your idea is very interesting and nice.

I'd like support a new project based on the couple < demoscene & 3dfx Voodoos cards >, with the demo's code based on GLide APIs, and so the new works could be runned by Voodoo hardware only.

I made this topic sticky; so you wait some other day, because finding people with skill and (GLide or DirectX or OpenGL) programming capability, and (free) time is not easy in general. Then, we can think to add more visibility to your request posting an announce on the site.

Bye bye

Gaz:

I love the ideea, but unfortunatelly my programing skills are not enough for this kind of projekt.
I alreay download these demos but none is working on voodoo5.

If testers are needed, i'll be glad to help !
Let me know :)
Follow your dreams !

Thanks for the 'sticky' :)

lets hope something good comes from this.

I'm surprised no ones done it before tbh.

Very good idea. I've always liked demos but am no programmer/coder.
Until one sees this and decide to donate their skills/time, couldn't we also put some links towards some demos.
I remember getting a few of them years ago on some CDs given with a french magazine called Joystick. One needed a 3-dfx to function and I got it to run with my voodoo1. I don't have the card any more nor the CD with the demo, but if you have some links, please share.

Ok, here's my first search result (I know, you can also just use google). I will try that one at home later today, am at work now...
If you read the nfo, there's mention of a stats.txt file where some stats are logged, so the demo can even be used to "benchamrk".
Check the one there to see how glide ridiculously "killed" D3D :D

I like the idea. How about a "The way it's meant to be played" remake? :D
