Okay,

It seems that there has been something else going on here.  I started using Koolsmokey's V.Control utility solely to control the refresh rate that games use.  My Voodoo5 6000 is fairly picky about what refresh rates it uses, and with many games, the default refresh results in a picture that is unstable and has wavy lines.  I found that forcing another refresh such as 100hz stabilizes the image.

I am not overclocking the card as far as I can tell, and don't want to.

What I have determined is that V.Control seems to be responsible for the hangs when FSAA is enabled.  If I kill V.Control the hangs don't occur, although if I leave it running games are unstable.

Any ideas as to what is going on here?  Alternatively, are there any other utilities that can be recommended to adjust refresh rate without causing any other problems?

Thanks!

Greetings,

My card is a:

Model 3700 series
Make A
210-0391-001-A

Hank did a lot of work on this card, and I would assume that included the re-work if it was needed.  For all I know, this is a problem specific to some games, but I wanted to see what others were experiencing, in case temperature sensitivity may be an issue.

The two 120mm case fans that I have in this system are a bit slow, so I ordered some replacements.  I also have a Thermaltake 420watt power supply with a variable speed exhaust fan on high, and a slot blower below the V5 6K exhausting hot air from that area of the case.

Driver or settings wise, I'm not sure what might cause additional instability so any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Greetings,

I've been trying to play some different games on my Voodoo5 6000, and have found that often if FSAA is used (2x-4x-8x) that the system will hang periodically.  This seems to be occurring quite regularly on 2D screens on the game "Might and Magic VII".

I'm trying to determine if this might be related to the game, system temperature, or drivers.  The problem seems to occur more during the day when it is warmer, as one night I played for several hours with 8x FSAA with no problems at all.

If I shut down the FSAA and play with single processor mode, it seems to work fine.  Attempts to increase cooling do not seem to have helped as of yet, although I am too afraid to replace the factory fans on the V5 6K with better ones so I'm limited to improving case cooling.

Any recommendations would be appreciated.  Is there any way to diagnose the card?

I'm using Windows98se and Amigamerlin 2.9 (with Glide dlls from the 3.0 XP distribution).

Hank?  AM?

Your consideration is greatly appreciated,

If I recall, the only cards that will identify as offering SLI mode, are a pair of Voodoo2 cards, or a Quantum Obsidian 24x.  With a Voodoo5, you can run in higher resolutions, though the software may not see that you have a two chip configuration.

To get Novalogic's F-16 running on my Voodoo5, I had to copy the appropriate Glide2x.dll or Glide3x.dll into the folder where the game was installed.  After doing this and re-starting the game, suddenly the additional accelerated options were available.

As I recall, the MiG29 and F-16 games used the same engine.

See if you can find the correct Glide*.dlls on your system, and put a copy in the game folder.

Good luck!

FYI, almost all Novalogic games can still be played on-line for free on the Novalogic servers at Novaworld, ping permitting ;)

The dlls that I used were from the Amigamerlin 3.0 drivers for WindowsXP.  I downloaded that archive, opened it, and copied the Glide2x.dll and Glide3x.dll over those from the Windows98 drivers - find them on your computer, probably in Windows\System, and replace them:

I got the XP drivers here:

https://www.3dfxzone.it/dir/3dfx/voodoo5/winxp.htm

Hope that helps!

Greetings,

I have this problem with my Voodoo5 6000, which is that certain refresh rates are met with wavy on screen interference.  My way around this has been to try to run games at higher refresh rates.

I found Koolsmokey's v.Control program, which I have used solely to set the refresh rates for 640x480 and 800x600, so games don't run at a headache inducing 60hz in Windows 98se.

Since then, I have had some games crash pretty hard, and I'm wondering if the higher refresh rates could be responsible, or if I am somehow overdriving my Voodoo5 6000.  The last thing that I want to risk is damage to this card.

In these resolutions, I am running at 120hz since my monitor seems to be very stable at that rate.

I don't think that I'm overclocking the card in any way, at least not intentionally.  Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Thanks everyone!  My brain was telling me there was a key built into the Amigamerlin drivers, but it's always telling me nutty things :P

What game is that, by the way?

On another topic, is there still any way to use the Anti-aliasing demo key in the Amigamerlin drivers?  I would like to make comparative screenshots, but that option seems to be replaced by Z-culling or something else.

Greetings,

Can anyone suggest the best way to take screenshots on a Voodoo5?  I'm using Amigamerlin's 2.9 drivers on Windows98se.

Thanks!

In case anyone experiences the same problem that I did with lines in Glidos, it turned out that I needed to use a different Glide2x.dll in the Glidos folder.  I was advised to use the one from the Openglide distribution, and now Carmageddon works very nicely on the Voodoo5 6000.

I am using Windows98se on that system, although these games still won't run on a Voodoo5 since they are hard wired for early versions of Glide.  I have found one glide emulator that runs some of these games in OpenGL, called Glidos.

Please see this thread for more information:

Greetings,

I've recently found a fantastic program that allows some of the old Voodoo 1 games to run in OpenGL on modern video cards.  Some of the games that are currently working are:

Carmageddon (the original and Splat Pack), Tomb Raider (high resolution textures available), Elder Scrolls Redguard, Blood, Screamer II, Red Baron, Dreams to Reality, Extreme Assault...

The program is called Glidos, and is available for $10 from:
http://www.glidos.net/

I've got Carmageddon working properly in WindowsXP with an ATI Radeon 9700Pro, and with some defects on Windows98se and a Voodoo5 6000.

I'm getting vertical lines over bitmapped menus and screen overlays on the Voodoo5.

In any case, for any of you that may have old glide games that you wish to run on whatever card you have, this may be worth a try.

Cheers!

Greetings,

I've been digging into my old games, and wondering if there is any way I'll ever be able to play some of them.  While installing various things onto my Voodoo5 system, I've run across some games that won't work - though I can't be sure what version of Glide they are looking for.  Lots of games say that they support a 3Dfx chipset, but aren't specific about which ones - so it has been trial and error.

I'm wondering if there are any tricks to getting older titles to work on later 3Dfx boards.

Some games that I've tried to get going are the original Carmageddon for 3Dfx, Whiplash 3D, Elder Scrolls - Redguard, and Resident Evil.

Carmageddon and Whiplash, for example, were Voodoo1 games.  Carmageddon could be coaxed into running on a Voodoo2 with some visual defects as I recall, but Whiplash is one that I have always missed.

At one point, I even tried putting my Voodoo1 card back into a newer system, but it wouldn't even boot with the card installed.  I may also be able to install a Voodoo2 SLI into a newer system that has a different primary video card, and am curious if anyone is doing this.

Of course, getting old Glide games to run on the Voodoo5 would be even better.

Any suggestions?

In this case, I'm running from 98se.  I'll have to setup a dos configuration to see the CD-Rom, sound card, etc... before I can test DOS mode, and it has been a while.

Part of the problem may be that there are about 50 versions of Mechwarrior 2.  I personally have the original DOS version, the ATI Rage version, the 3Dfx version, and the Titanium Edition Windows version.

Each one seems to use a different graphics engine, and it seems that all of the 3D accelerated versions are limited to 640x480 and a very short drawout distance.  In this case, the eye candy is not as important as being able to see the enemy when they are far away.

So, I'm trying to get the good old DOS version running - the one with 1024x768 capable software rendering, simply because I never finished these games (Mech2, Ghost Bear's Legacy, and Mercenaries) and I would like to do so before I move onto Mech3, Mech4, etc... Call me old fashioned.

However, despite the "advanced" program settings that I have attempted in Windows98se with regard to memory types and quantities set aside for legacy programs, Mechwarrior 2 divides by zero if I attempt anything but 320x200.  Everything that I can find on the topic points to the need for a VESA driver.  I tried Scisoft display doctor with no success, just as the last five times I tried it this decade.  I'm just wondering if anyone recalls what this VESA business is all about.

Of course, it isn't the end of the world if I can't play this set of games, and I'm definitely not willing to gamble with my Voodoo 6000 BIOS in an attempt to get them games working.

Any ideas are welcome though...

Greetings,

Your title indicates problems with Aquanox, which confuses me since I installed it an played a few days ago on my Voodoo5 6000.  I'm using Windows 98se with Amigamerlin 2.9, albeit with some replaced .dll files as per the following thread regarding color banding:

I'm speaking of the original Aquanox, the first sequal to Archimedean Dynasty, not Aquanox 2.  Sorry I don't have Spellforce.

Please let me know if I can help.
