Playing glquake on my newly purchased voodoo video card is the single greatest PC experience I have ever had, for the first time I really became attached to a hardware company and the direction they were taking graphics on the PC, and I have been a fan ever since!

Hail 3dfx :D

@Komponent,

Excellent, now if somebody can just figure out a way to get a 5500 to use 128 mb of memory ;)

Games / UT99 + S3TC texture in glide ??
16 March 2006, 14:57:55
QuoteI already have UT 99 running in OpenGL+S3TC textures on my main PC (Athlon64+X800XL)

Me too (Athlon64 3400 & Radeon X850XT PE) :D

Quotebut I would like to know if you can use the high rez textures in glide mode on a Voodoo 5 or you must play in OpenGl mode to be able to enable those textures.

OpenGL only ;)

@Steph3dfx,

QuoteI have just finished Undying on my vintage system. Wow what a superb game

I agree with you 100%, it's one of my all time favourite FPS games [8D]

I have been playing alot of Descent3 and Freespace 2 lately (1024x768, 4X FSAA in glide mode) and there both fantastic games ;)

The alpha-36 driver's 3dfxvs.dll file has a much larger file size (622 kb) in this release than previous one's, lot's of something has been added [:0]

@SFFT,

Once again, your continued driver development is greatly appreciated [8D]

@ManiaC,

QuoteI had considered doing that, having it running as a secondary display adaptor, but i'm a little concerned that having mu FX5950U(single slot cooling) and my Voodoo 5 and my creative labs X-Fi all in close proximity may be pushing it a bit....i have a 550W PSU (cheapo brand so it's most likely a 350 with an extra rail) so power shouldn't be a problem....i just don't really want to have to switch cables.

Your call, but this is my setup in one of my systems with a Radeon X850XT-PE and it takes all of 10 seconds to switch cards ;)

Either driver should serve you well, but I prefer the SFFT driver (more advanced d3d) with V.Control for making tweaks:

@ManiaC,

As for a driver you could try the SFFT Alpha 36:

https://www.3dfxzone.it/dir/news/3dfx/sfft_alpha36_voodoo3_4_5/

Because your Voodoo 5500 is a pci model, you could use it as a secondary display adapter with your Geforce card as explained here:

@Steph3dfx,

A 1ghz cpu should be pretty good for most older retro games, but a 5500 scales very well with much faster processors, check out this link for some Doom3 pics I took:

http://www.3dfxzone.it/enboard/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=1332

Also the best windows 98 driver for VSA-100 based cards (I've tried most of them) in my opinion is the amigamerlin 2.9, much better than the last official 3dfx driver ;)

@Steph3dfx,

Tres, tres bien ;)

Hopefully you have a windowed case to show off such a great looking 3dfx card [8D]

3dfx forever ;)

@Steph3dfx,

Good to hear your 5500 mod is coming along nicely. Getting the factory applied epoxy cleaned off the gpu's is typicaly the most time consuming part of this modification.

Take your time and do a good job ;)

Will be waiting for you to post some pics when its done :D

@in3d,

If you want to get the maximum performance from your voodoo card, turn off V-sync in your 3dfx tools and/or games (if they give you the option) ;)

The 60hz your mentioning is the current refresh rate of your monitor, if your particular monitor supports higher frequency's (ex. - 75, 85, 100 etc.), please use them as 60hz would give just about anybody a serious headache after a short time of viewing.

@Steph3dfx,

Welcome to this great forum :D

I also have a great affection for collecting and playing the older (retro) games, along with collecting 3dfx cards, it's one of my favourite hobbies (200+ games) ;)

After seeing glquake & Tomb Raider running on a best freinds computer, I immediately went the next day and bought a Diamond Monster 3D for $399 Canadian and have been a 3dfx fanatic ever since :D

My current 3dfx systems:

#1. Pentium 233mhz, Voodoo 1 pci, 64mb system ram.

#2. Pentium 2 333mhz, Voodoo Basnshee agp, 128mb system ram.

#3. Pentium 3 650mhz, Voodoo3 3500 agp, 256mb system ram.

#4. Pentium 3 1000mhz, Voodoo 5500 agp, 256mb system ram.

#5. Athlon XP 2000mhz, Voodoo 5500 agp, 512mb system ram.

#6. Athlon 64 3400, Radeon X850 XT-PE & Voodoo 5500 pci, 1gb system ram.

3dfx forever [8D]
