General Discussions / D3D problem
07 December 2003, 17:58:24
Ywep I foubd ou that Single Chip mode in D3D only works fine - this actually isnt single chip though so I think the problem is in the drivers for Fastest - I on't think it actaully is running single chip as 3dmark2001 score for me is over 2000 - I think this score is ballpark for V5 - if it was only running single chip wold expect the score to be lower.

Solution? - Set D3D in tools to Single Chip.

Amiga - If you are reading this any thoughts?

Agreed - Many many people are grateful for all the ongoing devlopment of 3dfx drivers and patches - just look at the number of downloads at say voodoofiles - 10's or even 100's of thousands! Keep up the good work - it IS appreciated!

Hi Nightbird - no - I have removed the FX5800 so only the Voodoo in there and this is a clean install with just the V5.

OK here is the latest and somone else has reported this exact same problem...

Glide and OpenGL work fine with AmigaMerlin 3.0 and Voodoolizer 1.05.

Both fail Direct3d (dxdiag and 3dmark etc).

If I change to "Single Chip only" for D3D in 3dfx Tools all works fine.

The card is not damaged and the second chip is not damaged.

As others have reported this the same it must be another issue - somthign I was thinking was what effect does the "VIA Chipset" settings may have in a non-VIA Mobo? (I use Intel)

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated....

No still doesnt work - Glide and OpenGL are no problem but D3D just refuses.
Am going to try the Voodoolizer 1.05 drivers tonight and if they dont work may consider returning to Windows 2000.

Benchmarking / Ur and UT Dual Xeon Voodoo 5500

Unreal No FSAA 1024x768 (32bit desktop) High Quality Settings :- Avg. 150fps

Unreal 2xFSAA (rest as above) :- 55fps
Unreal 4xFSAA (rest as above) :- 33fps

Unreal Tournament (Only allows 16bit with Glide) No FSAA, 1024x768 High Quality Settings :- Avg. 138fps
UT 2xFSAA (rest as above) :- 42fps
UT 4xFSAA (rest as above) :- 27fps

Don't know if this is good or bad so thoughts would be welcome - will be posting Halflife, UT2003 and (hopefully) 3dmark2001SE scores soon. (My Amiga 3.0 driver is not allowing me to do Direct3D in XP).

You have been having exactly the same problem as me my friend!
Windows XP Professional - Clean Install - DX9.0b loaded - AmigaMerlin installed exactly as per instructions - Glide runs great - OpenGL runs great - Direct3D hangs the machine.

Other forums are posting simialr problems with this driver - I use an Intel Mobo so not VIA chipset but of course I believe I may well switch back to Windows 2000 and just use the 3dfx driver as the alternative of "Use Koolsmokey's Glide, FreezeMonkeys OpenGL and Megadeaths D3D drivers except for Blah Game where you will need to run Cyberpunks wrapper or Doh Game where you will need to run x-3d's Glide mega zoom driver...." is just too much of a pain.....

I'll try it tonight - many thanks for the replies!

Been scouring the net for a comprehensive list of games which support/ed the Glide API natively (ie. not having to use wrappers). Unreal/UT obviously but can somone either list or link to a list of all the games which used this?

Thanks!

Hi - using 9.0b (Windows Update) and was already loaded before the AmigaMerlin driver as specified in the README.

Thanks anyway.

Thanks for the reply - using Windows XP Professional.
As an update I tried installing Unreal and can run this no problems using Glide (looks lovely!) and screen sizing and refresh rate etc are also no problem. FSAA works etc. so looks like everything is OK except the Direct3D test in dxdiag..... Now instead of the machine just freezing with a blank screen I get an upside down DirectX logo (the green cross) and then the machine just hangs......

If I can play my games then I don't mind about dxdiag per-se but of course makes me nervous when this doesnt run.

Hi all - A little problem its getting late so have not installed agame yet but installed the Amigamerlin drivers (registry change - run driver setup.exe - reboot - then run setup.exe for the 3dfxtools) and all seems fine but - I tried running DXDIAG and my machine just hangs - done a complete clean XP install - Any ideas?

I have a PCI V5 so AGP does not interest me so I would say more RAM and SLI.

Why wouldn't you open it? - You think it will be worth somthing in the future? - I dont think so.......A friend is manager for a PC Parts shop they had this in their store room when clearing out - I paid £25 (GB Pounds) for it.

Just managed to get hold of a "brand new" boxed (still shrink wrapped) Voodoo5 PCI for not much money - used to have an AGP one of these ages ago (paired with a K6-III 450) and wanted to see it would run on my Dual Xeon setup - Any problems installing this alongside an FX5800 Ultra AGP?

Games I hope to try are Quake III+Navy Seals Mod, UT, UT2003, HalfLife,  Serious Sam 1 & 2. (Also play Eve Online MMORPG but as this is a DX9 game guess it wont work on the V5(?)).

And hi to all and congrats on keeping 3dfx alive! :D :D :D
