Title: Amigamerlin 3.1 R1 driver instability
Post by: baskapteijn on 27 April 2005, 16:28:49
Hello everyone,

I've just updated my 3dfx Voodoo 5 5500 AGP card drivers from Amigamerlin 3.0 to 3.1 R1, and found out that I get all kinds of errors in windows with that driver. Most of the time I get blue screens. After rebooting, windows gives an error that's related to the 3dfx glide driver. Does anyone have any experience with this? Maybe it's related to the hardware mouse option I've enabled in the 3dfx tweak panel?

There is also a newer version available: Amigamerlin 3.1 R6

Maybe that one will work better for you.

Thank you! I hope it will, 'cause the D3D core of the R1 driver rocked! I will try the driver now! Greetings,

Im back, and have tested the R6 driver you'd mention omega_supreme. I must say that this driver is more stable than the R1. So far I haven't had any lockups! One litte thing though, the D3D core is a little more slow than the R1 and 3.0 final core. But then again, glide seems a little faster. Don't know why. But thanx, your advice did work.

Greetings, Bas Kapteijn

Glad to be of help ;)

R6 uses the newer SFFT core so maybe it was optimised a bit in quality at the cost of speed, I'm not sure about that one. Glide should not be faster I think, I cant imagine Amiga did anything to that. OpenGL was  optimised for speed if I remember correct. Especially in Call of Duty the performance gain was noticable I was told by Amiga. Im glad you got it stable now.

This is what I've found out about the three latest drivers from amigamerlin. And as you can see, the R6 driver is indeed a little slower, but then again: great quality and support.

Amigamerlin 3.0 XP

Very stable in windows
Reasonably fast good quality glide/opengl driver(without mesafx)
buggy quality fast D3D
3dmark 2001se: 1811 (16 bit)
3dmark 2001se: 1753 (32 bit)
3dmark 2001se: 1827 (16 bit, tweaked: 2-pixel per clock on, D3D guardband clipping on)

Amigamerlin 3.1 R1

Unstable in Windows
Very fast good quality glide/opengl driver(without mesafx)
Good quality fast D3D
3dmark 2001se: 1828 (16 bit)
3dmark 2001se: 1738 (32 bit)
3dmark 2001se: 1850 (16 bit, tweaked: D3D guardband clipping on)

Amigamerlin 3.1 R6

Stable in windows
Very fast good quality glide/opengl driver(without mesafx)
Good quality slow D3D
3dmark 2001se: 1774 (16 bit)
3dmark 2001se: 1692 (32 bit)
3dmark 2001se: 1807 (16 bit, tweaked: D3D guardband clipping on)
