Installer
Q: When I try to install the installer locks up at 0%.
A: There is a known problem with the System Shock 2 installer which occurs if your windows temp folder (usually c:/windows/temp ) folder if too full. We suggest that you delete all the files in this folder, and then try to install again.
Q: Will System Shock 2 run on my Windows 2000 or Windows NT machine?
System Shock 2 is a Win95/98 game and is only supported for use in these environments.
If you would like to try System Shock 2 on your Win2000 system, you will need to run the following command (from a DOS window or using the Run Program command):
Setup -lgntforce
Shock 2 may not run on Win2000 or WinNT due to incompatibilities between the SafeDisk copy protection and the OS. The patch should fix this issue though we do not officially support either Win2000 or WinNT.
Video
Q: My TNT card wont run in 1024x768.
A: System Shock 2 has problems with many older TNT driver versions. If you want to play System Shock 2, we recommend you upgrade your video drivers to the newest Nvidia reference drivers.
Q: I have an Intel 752 chipset video card and the game hangs/crashes.
A: This has been fixed for the patch. You'll need to use the configuration variable "safe_texture_manager" on a line of its own in the file "Shock.cfg" or "user.cfg" found in the directory from which you run System Shock 2. Open either file with Notepad, add the line, save the file, and close it.
Q: Why won't my 3Dfx card run at it's maximum resolution?
A: This is due to the type of z-buffering which System Shock 2 uses. Voodoo1 and Voodoo2 cards do not support this type of z-buffering at their highest resolution.
Q: In-game gamma correction does not work with my video card.
A: Although System Shock 2 supports in-game gamma correction, not all video cards support this functionality. The Voodoo1 and Voodoo2 pass through cards do not support this feature.
Q: The graphics distort on my Voodoo1 card.
A: Some Voodoo1 based 3d card owners may experience serious graphic glitches affecting textures and colored lighting. These glitches can be fixed by making a clean installation of the current drivers from 3Dfx.
Q: Does System Shock 2 support OpenGL or Glide?
A: No. System Shock 2 supports only Direct 3D.
Sound
Q: Does System Shock 2 support EAX?
A: Yes. Enable Audio hardware acceleration and EAX via the options panel at the Main Menu, before you enter the game. You cannot change your sound hardware settings from the in-game options panel.
Q: Does System Shock 2 support Aureal's A3D?
A: No. However, it does support hardware accelerated sound on Aureal cards via DirectSound.
Controller
Q: How do I get my joystick to work in System Shock 2?
A: You will need to edit your shock.cfg and enter the line
joystick_enable
on a line of its own. Remember to hit enter when you are done and then save the file.
Q: I have a Logitech mouse and my mouse is acting strange.
A: Logitech mouse drivers version 8.2 may cause corruption of the pointer in the game: updating the drivers to version 8.32 has been found to fix this.
Q: I've tried to rebind control keys and they don't get re-bound in both modes.
A: The user1.bnd and user2.bnd files are used in the two different game modes (action and use). If you modify one of these files manually you will only be affecting the control binding in one of the modes. There was a bug in which some keys, notably the numberpad keys, didn't get re-bound in both modes. This bug is fixed in the patch.
Q: Can I bind my mouse wheel?
A: The mouse wheel can be bound as a button in System Shock 2 via the options panel. You cannot bind its scroll up-down function.
Gameplay
Q: My computer runs slower after a crash.
A: This is most likely due to an issue with Microsoft DirectX. Try rebooting your machine should the program ever crash.
Q: After the Xerxes CD verification, my computer crashes to desktop/ gets a blue screen crash/ locks up.
A: If you're experiencing crashes, lockups or bluescreens when starting up System Shock 2, the problem is most likely your installation of Indeo Codec. Run the program "ivplay5.exe" from the root directory of the CD, and [re-]install the Codec. This program is required for Shock to play movies (.avi's).
Q: I have a SCSI CD-ROM drive and Shock is running poorly.
A: Some SCSI CD drives have problems with SafeDisc, System Shock 2's copy protection system. Typically, the SCSI CD drive spins down to 1x as it tries to read the encrypted part of the disc, but it does not spin back up to normal speed. After the CD verification screen, when you see the main menu, eject the CD and re-insert it into the drive. The drive will then spin at its normal speed.
Q: I'm overloading my psi powers and they don't seem to last as long as I expected them to.
A: Psi overloading increases the effect of your psi stat. Stats are generally capped at 8. You may find some psi powers improve their effect anyway, but you are not guaranteed any improvement if your effective psi stat is already at 8.
Q: What is the status of multiplayer?
A: Download the patch (5351KB) to add up-to-4-person cooperative multiplayer support to System Shock 2.
Q: I keep get attacked by an invisible and invincible AI.
A: It is possible for a spawned AI to become invisible and invincible as a result of saving and loading. This problem should be fixed in the patch. The fix will fix an existing save game with this problem.
Q: I don't like the fact that my weapons keep breaking.
A: Although this is a significant part of the game, we have provided an unsupported configuration variable in the patch which allows you to adjust the rate at which weapons degrade. This variable allows you to completely prevent your weapons from degrading in quality, at the extreme setting.
Q: I don't like the fact that monsters keep respawning.
A: We have provided in the patch an unsupported configuration variable to decrease random monster spawning.
Q: My quick-saved games keep getting over-written.
A: The quick-save slot is shared by the auto-save that occurs at level transitions. It is also invalidated whenever any other saved game is loaded. You should save through the save/load menu if you wish to avoid these problems.
The patch adds the ability to re-bind quick-save and quick-load to save or load to a different save slot.
Patch Issues
Q: Will the patch invalidate my save-games?
A: No. You should be able to continue playing from your existing save games after applying the patch.
Q: What are the minimum specifications for Multiplayer?
A: To host a game, the minimum spec is as follows: Pentium (tm) 266 with 64Mb RAM, 56k modem.
Client minimum spec.: P-233, 64Mb RAM, 56k modem.
NOTE: applying the patch does not change your ability to play the single-player game on a P-200 with 32Mb RAM. The above specifications, listed in the patch Readme, apply only to the Multiplayer game.
Spoilers Follow:
Q: I'm in Hydroponics and I can't get through the window into the room with two broken doors.
A: Break the window. Then try mantling onto the desk instead of jumping onto it (move next to the desk, jump and hold down the jump key until you climb onto the desk). You should then be able to squeeze through.
This problem is fixed in the patch, although it will not change existing save games that have already got to Hydroponics.
Q: I'm in the Many and I can't kill the giant boss brain.
A: In order to kill the Many it is necessary to first destroy the 3 stars that revolve around the brain. It is possible for one or more of these stars to leave the level. This bug can come into effect when you repeatedly save and reload within quick succession while on this level. You can work around this bug by not saving many times in quick succession (within 20-30 seconds of each other). You can also download the patch in which this bug is fixed. The patch also fixes existing save in which one or more stars has already left the world. You may have to wait a few seconds for the stars to re-appear. |
